Abstract:: Custom MOS circuits comparable in density and performance to handcrafted circuits can be designed with a two-level silicon compilation method. Used interactively, the two levels enable the IC designer to control chip area and performance. We describe this approach to silicon compilation, and present the results of a carefully conducted design experiment.
